Comedian Al Franken has been been declared the winner of the Minnesota senatorial election. The recount has Mr. Franken ahead of republican incumbent Norm Coleman by 225 votes. Mr. Coleman’s camp has vowed to take the recount results to court. Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn has vowed a filibuster preventing Mr. Franken from being seated in the Senate. Mr. Cornyn said, “There are the issues that have been raised in the Minnesota Supreme Court about double-counted ballots and other irregularities in the process, which are important to make sure that every vote counts”. So the Republicans are NOW interested in having every vote count. Senator Cornyn’s comments demonstrates the cynical nature of Republican politics, as well as indicate the future obstructionist game plan they plan to employ.
